“And you brought her here?” a woman asked.

Justina heard the voice from far away. She kept her eyes closed. Her mind drifted in the fog between waking and sleep, and she couldn’t pull apart what was real from dreams. Her body felt as if she were carried by drones, but her mind focused on the conversation.

“It was a life debt,” Roderic’s voice answered. The sound of it pulled her from the torturous flight of the drones toward the safety she felt near him. “Because of her Jaxx and Fiora live.”

“You did as honor commanded, my son,” a man said, though he didn’t seem pleased, “and we will all have to face the price.”

Roderic’s father, Prince Quinn?

“Calm yourself, my love,” the woman admonished. “You are the one who instilled honor in our son. You can’t be angry when he only acts as you have instructed.”

Princess Tori, his mother.

“I’m not angry. I’m concerned,” Quinn said.

“He was right to bring her.” Tori’s words were followed by soft tapping and a series of beeps. “Her body is riddled with growths. Even first-generation medical scanners would pick these up. How do you know her?”

“She brought Princess Fiora to me in the forest,” Roderic said. “Then she saved Jaxx by sacrificing herself to a couple of census drones.”

“Drone blasters wouldn’t cause this,” his mother said. “This is long-term damage and easily treatable, time consuming but easy.”

“The Federation just scanned her.” Roderic sounded farther away. “I don’t know all the details, but they mentioned she might start to urinate blood.”

“Probably the mass on her kidney,” Tori stated. “I’ll know more when I see the full report.”

“Is it an effect of the virus?” his father asked. “Or the radiation poisoning they’ve been adamant about?”

“The Federation hasn’t been forthcoming with the medical records, but if the radiation poisoning claims are true, I would expect this medical booth to cause the abnormalities to worsen. Instead, the lasers are working.” Tori sounded irritated. “Their doctors should have been able to help her.”

Justina felt as if something warm brushed her cheek. She wondered if it was Roderic’s fingers caressing her.

“Her brain activity is showing she’s waking up,” his mother said over a series of beeps. “She’s going to be in there for hours. Let’s make sure she rests comfortably. No need to—”

“Justina? Can you hear me?”

Justina fought to open her eyes and turned her head to follow Roderic’s voice.

“Justina?” He sat next to her, lower than where she rested, so his shoulders were on level with her eyes. He leaned over so she could see his face. “It’s good to see you with us. You’ve been asleep for quite some time.”

“I think I hear your parents?” She lifted her head only to bump it on the top of the booth. “Ow.”

Lasers instantly danced over her head where she’d bumped it, soothing the irritation.

“They were here earlier. They stepped out for a few hours while the booth works.” He smiled as if relieved. She stared at his mouth, liking the expression. “I don’t want you to worry.
